One recent summer, I spent time driving for both Doordash and Grubhub at the same time. While doing this, I noticed a few differences outlined below. Checkout my Dasher Tracker spreadsheet used to track your income, mileage, taxes, and more for Doordash, Grubhub, Uber Eats, and other delivery services.
Grubhub
He are a few things that Grubhub has that DoorDash does not:
- Order-ahead pickup: Grubhub offers an order-ahead pickup option, which allows customers to order and pay for their food ahead of time and pick it up themselves, rather than having it delivered.
- Cash payment option: Grubhub allows customers to pay for their orders with cash, while DoorDash only accepts electronic payments.
- Restaurant rewards programs: Grubhub partners with some restaurants to offer their own rewards programs, which can be used in addition to Grubhub’s own rewards program.
- Seamless POS integration: Grubhub has a POS (point-of-sale) integration system that allows restaurants to easily receive and manage orders through their existing systems, without needing to use an additional tablet or device.
- Your driving zone is much larger than your zone in Doordash. You can travel as far as 60 minutes from one end to the zone to the other end. In comparison, Doordash zones are smaller and allow you to stay closer to the area you started driving in.
Doordash
In comparison, here are some DoorDash offerings that Grubhub does not offer.
- DashPass subscription: DoorDash offers a subscription service called DashPass that provides free delivery and reduced service fees for eligible orders, which can save customers money in the long run.
- No tipping threshold: DoorDash does not have a tipping threshold, meaning customers can tip any amount they choose, even for smaller orders, whereas Grubhub has a minimum tipping amount. As a driver for both, I did not notice any difference in pay with the minimum tipping amount.
- Partnership with convenience stores: DoorDash has partnerships with some convenience stores, allowing customers to order items like snacks, drinks, and household essentials for delivery. This includes certain pharmacies.
- Scheduled deliveries: DoorDash allows customers to schedule deliveries in advance, which can be convenient for planning ahead for meals or events.
- As a driver, the DoorDash App is much more user friendly. It’s map is easier to use and it has a floating app icon that allows you to minimize the app and multitask. It is also easier to pause your dash for a bathroom break.
It’s worth noting that both services offer a wide selection of restaurants, contactless delivery options, and customer support. Ultimately, which service to use may depend on personal preference, availability in your area, and the specific features that are most important to you.
In terms of pay and cost of food, I did not notice any difference between the two services. Their prices for food are very similar if not the same and their pay is the same. Maybe it’s because I use Doordash more, but Doordash does give me more opportunities to earn bonuses and I prefer the shorter driving distances offered with the smaller Dash zones in Doordash.
